Steve Bruce says he would back any move to suspend Premier League fixture list

Steve Bruce has revealed he would back any move from the Premier League if they decide to suspend top-flight fixtures this season.

The Magpies are awaiting a decision from the Premier League this morning to see if their game with Sheffield United goes ahead.

Initially, PM Boris Johnson insisted games would not need to be postponed because of the spread of coronavirus, but in the last 24 hours there has been a change of mind.

Bruce said: "I think it is strange and difficult - not just those involved in football.

"We have prepared for the game, people have said behind closed doors but the game is about the supporters and their welfare is the most important thing.

"We will continue to prepare as normal but we are waiting for a phone call.

"There is a meeting at 10.30am so we will wait."

Bruce does not feel that playing games behind closed doors will suffice.

Bruce added: "You play football to be in front of fans and playing behind closed doors is not the answer.

"Suspend it, shut it down and play it at a later date.

"I think football is played for the supporters.

"The idea of playing in front of nobody does not appeal at all.

"In my opinion, suspend it and wait for the all clear.

"I think the phone call will be to suspend it, I don't think there is any alternative."

When asked if his players are concerned about the worrying situation, Bruce: "We're all talking about it. You can't help it.

"In the space of 24 hours managers and players have it.

"None of our players (are at that stage) though."
