Steve Bruce's verdict on Newcastle United's Mr Dependable Paul Dummett

Steve Bruce has hailed Paul Dummett after his rock steady display against Tottenham Hotspur.

Dummett made 12 defensive clearances during the game in the capital and also weighed with some crucial interventions.

Bruce said: “Dummett was terrific.

“Talk about putting your head onto everything, every time the ball came into the box, he seemed to get on the end of it.

“But it’s very difficult to single anyone out, because everyone in the team did well.

“Dummett epitomises everything I like in a footballer.

“He’s a typical Geordie and he has a right good go, which is good to see.”

Bruce is now the fifth consecutive manager that has kept faith with Dummett.

But after the win against Spurs he was then asked his own position, Bruce said: “As I said at the time, I was totally selfish to take it.

“I knew it was going to be difficult, if I’m going to be brutally honest, I didn’t think it was going to be that difficult from day one and we hadn’t even played a game.”
