Steve Bruce's message to Sheffield Wednesday fans as he addresses departure

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has reflected on his decision to quit Sheffield Wednesday after just six months in charge.

Bruce's exit left Sheff Wed owner Dejpon Chansiri fuming and the Owls have responded subsequently with an angry statement.

But Bruce will now look forward to his first game in the dugout away to Preston at Deepdale when the team returns to the UK next week.

Reflecting on leaving Sheff Wed, Bruce said: "I can understand the disappointment.

"I enjoyed the three or four, five months I worked there.

"But I'd like to put it out there that a manager's contract can be terminated.

"It is what it is and it applies when a manager wants to leave."

Sheff Wed delayed Bruce's arrival to Newcastle.

It has emerged that United wanted to announce the deal last Friday, but Sheff Wed held things up.

Bruce added: "I thought it was in hand.

"But I wish them the best of luck, as I've said it was the challenge to manage this great club.

"It was the over-riding factor for me to be as selfish as I was."
