Steve Bruce's message to Newcastle United players going into September

Steve Bruce has suggested Newcastle United can emerge stronger after the international break - if they can retain focus in games.

Goalkeeper Freddie Woodman has now faced three penalties in his first three Premier League matches and has endured a baptism of fire.

It may not get any easier at Man United when Ronaldo and co face the Magpies at Old Trafford, but less daunting games against Leeds, Watford and Wolves will follow.

Bruce felt his team should have beaten Southampton with Newcastle 2-1 up before Jamaal Lascelles foul on Adam Armstrong earned the Saints a penalty which James Ward-Prowse duly converted.

Bruce said: "In the second half we were much better as we got on the ball and showed the courage to go and play.

"It was much better.

"In my opinion, they deserved to go on and win it.

"But we have now given three penalties away and it's cost us badly.

"We scored with two or three minutes to play and have not seen it through, that is disappointing.

"Decisions have gone against us but we have to stop making decisions and giving penalties away."

The point kept Newcastle out of the bottom three during the international break.

But Bruce, speaking to BBC Sport, said: "We're up and running.

"Of course when you score with 30 seconds left and then concede a penalty via VAR, it's tough to take.

"So we're all bitterly disappointed over what's gone on."
