Steve Bruce's message to Newcastle United fans ahead of Watford clash

Newcastle United head coach Steve Bruce believes a full and vocal St James’ Park can tip the balance against rock-bottom Watford today.

Bruce sounded like a genuinely excited manager as he aims for his first win as boss at St James’ Park.

Indeed, with the game kicking off at the more traditional 3pm slot, Bruce feels this will give the ground an extra buzz.

Bruce told the Chronicle: “The urge to the supporters is to get right behind the team again.

“I thought the crowd were excellent against Leicester.

“If they can help us and contribute to us making it a decent start to a difficult opening.

“It took us until the 11-game mark to collect six points last season, and to do that after four games would be good.”

Bruce’s last home game came amid the backdrop of a boycott as fans protested against owner Mike Ashley.

Bruce respects why fans choose to stay away but hopes many will return to see their side pick up a first victory of the season.

He said: “I hope so, but supporters are entitled to their opinion.

“They pay their hard-earned money.

“The one thing you can never take for granted is the support for their team which is always there no matter who the owner or manager is.

“It’s like it always should be.

“They can play their part at St James’ Park with a full crowd.

“Let’s hope we can give them something to shout about.

“I hope that a result and the way we played against Leicester and Spurs gives everybody that bit of faith in the team.”
