Steve Bruce's message for Karl Darlow after Martin Dubravka is tied down until the age of 36

Steve Bruce has insisted that Karl Darlow is welcome to stay at Newcastle United.

The Toon goalkeeper has been in discussions with the club for some time over a new contract with his current deal set to expire at the end of the season.

Darlow has played just once for the first team in a competitive game in the last 14 months.

Bruce tied down Martin Dubravka on a long-term deal last week, and speaking before the Wolves game, Bruce was asked what the future held for his other senior stopper Darlow.

He told Chronicle Live: "I'd like Karl to stay too.

"It is vitally important that we have that competition.

"I don't go with 'He is number 1 and he's number 2'.

"If and when he gets his chance Karl will be fine.

"Look at Ciaran Clark he wasn't even in the squad the week before he got his chance against Man United.

"It's a squad game.

"Yes, the goalkeeper situation is always different, but I think Martin has had a very good time since he arrived at the club and we're delighted to tie him down."

Bruce has reminded his other fringe squad members that they will get their chance at some stage this season.

He said: "Wait for your opportunity but grasp it when it's there.

"If you do the rest will look after itself."
