Steve Bruce's cheeky pop at Alan Shearer - but Newcastle legend has the perfect answer

Steve Bruce aimed a cheeky dig at Alan Shearer following Newcastle United's draw at Liverpool - but the Magpies legend had the perfect reply.

Joe Willock's 96th-minute goal ensured the spoils were shared at Anfield on Saturday, just minutes after Callum Wilson's strike was controversially ruled out by VAR for handball.

It is a point which lifts Newcastle nine points clear of the relegation zone with just five matches remaining.

Shearer has been a regular critic of the Magpies in recent months in his role on BBC's Match of the Day show.

Bruce was told United's record goalscorer would be in the studio once again ahead of his post-match interview, and could not resist taking a humorous shot at the pundit.

The dig was later aired on the programme, with host Gary Lineker introducing the clip to Shearer and Micah Richards ahead of their analysis.

Bruce said: "Hope he's nice to us for a change! Miserable git!"

It was a message which provoked laughter in the studio, but Shearer had the perfect response to the Magpies head coach.

The pundit replied: "I've had to watch Newcastle all season, that's why!"

United will be hoping to add to their nine-point cushion and secure Premier League safety against Arsenal at St James' Park in their next outing.
