Steve Bruce reveals the scenario Newcastle United must avoid or face 'injuries galore'

Steve Bruce says that Newcastle United's back-room team are taking every health and safety measure possible to ensure a smooth passage back to competitive Premier League action.

Top-flight chiefs gave clubs the green light to train in small groups last week with a date of either June 12 or June 19 being spoken about as possible restarts for action.

Bruce is cautious about doing too much, too soon but knows that phase two of the Premier League's guidelines - when practice games at the training ground can get under way - will be extremely important.

Bruce said: "Phase two will be contact - and that will be the vital time.

"We've had something like eight weeks off now and for a professional footballer that's unprecedented.

"Even in midsummer, we have six weeks off maximum then six weeks training in pre-season.

"We can't just expect the players to ready like that.

"I have seen the date in June and I don't see how that will be possible or we'll get injuries galore."

Bruce knows that there will be big risks if players are forced to do too much after two months off but said the enthusiasm from his squad is there for all to see.

Bruce, speaking to NUFC TV, said: "As long as it's safe.

"We have to respect the players but I think the vast majority at Newcastle are ready to go back to work.

"That's a good sign."
