Steve Bruce reveals Newcastle United and Callum Wilson targeted Everton flanks

Steve Bruce believes Newcastle United fully deserved their three points against Everton and explained how his side targeted the flanks.

Newcastle secured a double over Carlo Ancelotti's side thanks to a second-half brace from striker Callum Wilson.

The goalscorer was playing in a slightly different role to his usual central striking position as he operated towards the wide areas.

Bruce explained that he thought he could get something from Everton down that side, and admitted he has been working on getting his team on the front foot for weeks.

He told his post-match press conference: “It's something that we came up with, to try something different tactically.

“We thought we could get a bit down that side. It was very pleasing.

“It's something we've been working on now for weeks.

“We've been working on trying to get on the front foot. I think the players have enjoyed it, certainly by looking at their performance today they've enjoyed the change.

“You need a result to go with it, so today everyone's happy.”

Wilson has been one of Newcastle's key players since his move from Bournemouth in the summer.

However, Bruce was keen to praise his whole side after the win over Everton, knowing how important they all were in getting a result at Goodison.

“He's [Wilson] put in a big performance, you need your big players. He needed the service as well,” Bruce added.

“Of course he's going to get the headlines but for me a clean sheet is always a great start.

“All round I thought we were at it today. It took a little while to settle into it which is normal, but I thought we thoroughly deserved it.

“To come here and win so convincingly is very, very pleasing.”
