Steve Bruce responds to Fulham mind games in Premier League relegation battle

Steve Bruce believes actions are louder than words after Fulham's vow to catch Newcastle United in this year's relegation battle.

The Cottagers have banked four points in the last week and the gap has been shortened in the last few games.

Scott Parker stated: "The gap was 10, now it is six."

While Fulham's Nigeria star Ola Aina stated the gap "will give way" after the draw at Burnley.

When asked about the confident stance of the London side, Bruce said: "Let's see where they are. If they are confident let's see where they are at the end of the season.

"You have to quietly get on with the job and get points on the board and that's what we'll do."

The Toon boss knows his side are still 15 points away from the so-called "Magic 40" and when asked about a target, Bruce said: "No matter what anybody else does you set yourself a target.

"Five, six or seven teams are separated by a couple of points. Fulham won the other night but they are struggling as well.

"We know we have to get to a certain figure as soon as we can."

Bruce is also still convinced that Newcastle aren't alone in the relegation battle and it isn't just about themselves and Fulham.

Bruce added: "From 13th downwards you are always looking over your shoulder.

"It's how you approach the games.

"We have had a couple of wins recently but always knew Chelsea and Man United would be tough."
