Steve Bruce responds to Chronicle's job poll as he vows to 'weather the storm'

Steve Bruce was asked his opinion on this week's straw poll - conducted by Chronicle Live - but insisted he must ignore the overwhelming results and focus on the game in hand.

Bruce refused to quit his dream job after the 3-0 defeat at Brighton & Hove Albion, and just as he did as a player, opted to put his head in where it hurts.

The former Norwich and Man United defender - who goes into the game with Spurs in dire need of three points - cut a calm figure at his Press conference after being told he retained the support of the club despite their precarious position.

United step up first in the Easter weekend relegation dogfight, and can put a temporary five-point cushion between themselves with Fulham facing an away day at Aston Villa later in the afternoon.

When asked for insight into the aftermath of Brighton and whether there had been any crunch talks, Bruce said: "Lee Charnley comes down to the training ground every week.

"There's nothing different in that, nothing different whatsoever.

"He comes down to see how things are, blah, blah, blah.

"There's nothing new there.

"It's how it works."

Bruce still believes he can steer Newcastle clear of the drop zone in the last nine games and what would happen after that would be down to owner Mike Ashley.

When asked if he would still be in the dugout for the first game of next season, Bruce added: "That's for other people to decide that, I can only focus on the next game which I am going to be.

"I will rely on my experience that I've drawn over the last 40 years.

"I'll need it over this testing time.

"I am determined to see it through.

"I hope I am the manager of Newcastle next year - it's for others to decide."

The Chronicle poll, which had 14,000 votes, resulted in 95% of participants asking for a change in boss.

Bruce said: "Look, I've said many, many times, everybody is entitled to their opinion. I really can't take any notice on polls.

"All I can focus on is Tottenham at the weekend and getting the squad as best prepared I possibly can, not take any notice of any polls."
