Steve Bruce reacts to question on whether he's still the right man for Newcastle job

Newcastle United boss Steve Bruce has insisted he remains the right man for the job at St James' Park - despite growing pressure from fans.

Bruce, who is preparing his team for a home clash with Leeds United on Tyneside, has not won in 10 games in all competitions.

The Magpies are set to add former Luton Town manager Graeme Jones to their back-room staff in the next 24 hours.

When asked about his own position and whether he was still the man, Bruce said: "I have been in it a long, long time.

"You draw experience from it. But the answer is yes."

Bruce was asked about the banner display at St James' on Saturday and replied: "I can understand the disappointment, we're on a poor run.

"All I can do is get the team in the best shape."

Bruce has been subjected to some stinging comments on social media and the club's poor run has resulted in a barrage of negative headlines.

Bruce said: "The word pressure is often used. You come under the pump.

"Whether it's the worst run and act with respect and dignity.

"There's no disputing we're on a difficult run.

"And the quicker you get a result the better.

"We're not alone in the Premier League.

"All you can do the best you can and try to focus on the match not the noise."

United lost 2-0 at Aston Villa in their last game and managed just one shot on target, Bruce said: "We got into good areas.

"Confidence is a bit low of course.

"The only way we can do it is to go back on the training ground."
