Steve Bruce reacts to being linked with Newcastle United's vacant managerial role

Steve Bruce says he is yet to receive an official approach from Newcastle United.

The Sheffield Wednesday manager is believed to be under consideration for the top job at St James' Park.

But he admits he does not know what his future holds.

With Bruce on a one-year rolling contract, United could pay a compensation package to release him.

Speaking from Sheff Wed's training base in Portugal last night Bruce said: "God only knows what happened on Tuesday afternoon.

"There seemed to be an upsurge (in the betting) from somewhere.

"John Terry was favourite (for the job) yesterday.

"It was Mikel Arteta the day before so who knows."

When asked about an approach the former Manchester United skipper, speaking to Sheffield Star, replied: "As far as I am concerned, I am here, I am going home tomorrow and looking forward to walking the dog!"

However, were Newcastle to make a move for Bruce he would be almost certain to want to talk to his boyhood club.

Bruce was touted for the job in 2004 but Newcastle could not agree a compensation package with Birmingham City.
