Steve Bruce provides Callum Wilson update amid Newcastle injury blow ahead of Chelsea clash

Steve Bruce has revealed mixed news on the injury front as Newcastle prepare to face Chelsea, with Ryan Fraser out and Callum Wilson given a chance to play.

Frank Lampard's side travel to St James' Park for the early kick-off on Saturday afternoon, knowing that a win would take them top of the Premier League table, if only for a matter of hours.

Lampard has already revealed that the Blues will be without Christian Pulisic and Thiago Silva for the trip north, but Kai Havertz is back and Ben Chilwell looks likely to be available.

Newcastle will be hoping to pick up three points that could take them up to seventh in the table, after a decent start to the season.

Bruce's side were beaten 2-0 away at Southampton in their last fixture before the international break, and the manager will be hoping his side can kick on with memories of a home win against Everton lingering from just three weeks ago.

But he will not have former Bournemouth winger Fraser available against Chelsea, and star striker Wilson could also miss out.

"Ryan Fraser won't make it for Saturday but Callum Wilson has a chance," Bruce told reporters.

"If there's any risk whatsoever then he won't play but he has trained the last few days and was very comfortable yesterday. He wants to play.

"It might be a bit early for Jonjo Shelvey but he's trained over the last three days. Matt Ritchie is another one who has trained and it's good news for us all that they're around the group again and available for selection."
