Steve Bruce praised for 'brilliant' tactics in Newcastle United's draw with Wolves

Steve Bruce has been praised for the way his tactics ensured Newcastle United stayed in the game against Wolves.

The Magpies bounced back from a heavy defeat to Manchester United to draw 1-1 against an in-form Wolves side on Sunday, with Jacob Murphy's late striker cancelling out Raul Jimenez's 80th-minute opener.

Speaking to Match of the Day, Tim Cahill said the way Newcastle nullified Wolves' threat and used Allan Saint-Maximin's ability on the counter-attack worked well.

The former Everton midfielder praised Bruce for the Magpies' tactical plan, arguing it was made all the more impressive by some key absentees through injury such as Jonjo Shelvey.

Wolves 1-1 Newcastle - Andrew Musgrove's verdict

He said: "I am going to be positive for Newcastle and Steve Bruce because losing 4-1 to Manchester United, going into this game against a Wolves team who just beat Leeds, you have to have a bit of caution because firstly, you need to get the team set-up, you have injuries, things are against you.

"But what I liked about Newcastle today was the way they sat behind the ball and kept shape.

"They had attacking players playing in the midfield. When the ball was played forward, they shuffled over, won tackles and got the ball to Saint-Maximin as quickly as possible.

"It’s brilliant because it is something they would have worked on in training.

"It’s all about staying in the game and making sure they don’t concede.

"Even though in this game they did, there were loads of positives for Newcastle who showed they can defend without their leaders like Jonjo Shelvey and players like that."
