Steve Bruce 'pleased' with Newcastle's performance but is left lamenting missed chances

Steve Bruce lambasted "big chances" in Newcastle United's early League Cup exit against Burnley.

Having dominated the second half, the Magpies fluffed their lines from the spot at the Leazes End as Allan Saint-Maximin and Miguel Almiron saw penalties saved by Wayne Hennessey.

After the second round exit, Bruce said: “We all know penalties can go either way.

"What pleased me was the performance but, if I’m going to be critical, we’ve missed, big, big chances.

"I can’t remember Burnley having a shot… but, we’re out of the cup.”

Bruce must now prepare his troops for the clash against Southampton on Saturday with pressure building after three defeats now in all competitions.

Before then Bruce will try to get another player through the door.

He said: "I’ve said it many times now: we’re looking at the loan market because we haven’t got any money to spend."

When asked how he will keep spirits up, Bruce said: "I don't think we have done much wrong despite not winning.

"We haven't lost on the night.

"We have to keep believing we can turn things around and keep going."
