Steve Bruce picks out two Newcastle United stars for special praise after Sheff United victory

Steve Bruce believes that Andy Carroll and Martin Dubravka's key contributions could not have come at a better time for Newcastle United.

The Slovakian stopper put in a 10/10 man of the match display while Carroll's towering presence at the other end helped seal the victory with an assist in his first start.

When asked about Carroll, Bruce said: "Andy Carroll can be crucial for us.

"It's pretty evident, and I think everyone can see that he needs games but he's got through 65 minutes.

"What their centre-halves dish out is right up Andy's street so it was a decision that worked. It also gave Joelinton a little rest."

And when asked about Dubravka's world-class display, he said: "In the second-half we defended much, much better.

"Martin [Dubravka] has pulled off some great saves and kept us in it at a crucial time.

"It's not bad to have a goalkeeper in such a rich vein of form."

Bruce also spoke about Allan Saint-Maximin's contributions and how the winger played through the pain barrier.

He said: "I didn't think Allan would be getting a header!

"I'm delighted for him, he's been carrying an ankle injury which isn't easy but he's rolled his sleeves up and got a reward tonight."
