Steve Bruce opens up on his requests to Newcastle United chiefs this summer

Steve Bruce believes that his transfer calls in the boardroom are paying off with Callum Wilson in the best early season form of any striker since Les Ferdinand, and Ryan Fraser also starting to prove his worth.

The two combined the win the game after a move that had been started by the other summer signings Jeff Hendrick and Jamal Lewis who worked the ball to Fraser before Wilson's crucial final touch.

Having struggled for goals last season, with Joelinton's £40million price tag weighing heavy on his shoulders, Newcastle have started the current campaign with 10 goals in the first seven matches and, while there is room for improvement in the final third, Wilson is looking the part.

After the game Bruce spoke of his transfer request to sign Wilson for £20million from the Cherries, he said: "That was important and that was the conversation I had with my chief exec, can we find somebody that we know is stick-on?

"Callum, over the last three, four, five years, he's proved that.

"He's proven in the Premier League, where any player who you take from abroad, it's always a bit of a gamble.

"If you can get a player who's played in the Premier League for the past four or five years and has a pedigree with it, as with Ryan Fraser – there's an assist from him straight away – then it certainly helps.

"To be fair, the board understood and accepted it and that's why we did what we did."

Bruce feels that Wilson has already paid a big chunk of his £20million fee off.

The former Manchester United skipper said: “He's certainly value for money, already he's value for money.

"The goal that he scores, he's in an around the six-yard box to bundle it in – that's what a goalscorer does, it's that instinct they have.

"I'm delighted. He's been a terrific asset to us."
