Steve Bruce opens up on Dan Barlaser's exit as midfielder readies himself for Rotherham United move

Steve Bruce has confirmed he is set to sell Dan Barlaser to Rotherham United.

Chronicle Live reported on Wednesday night that the Academy product was set to join the Millers and the Magpies had a agreed a fee that will also see them scoop around 50% of any future sale.

Bruce took a look at Barlaser after lockdown and in pre-season, but after reports of his sale broke, he said: "There is something imminent towards Rotherham.

"I wish him the best of luck, I hope it goes well. He needs to go and play football. It would be wrong for me to put him back with the Academy now."

Barlaser's exit has been prompted by the emergence of the Longstaff brothers with both midfielders ahead of him in the pecking order.

Sean Longstaff performed well at Newport and scored a crucial penalty in the shoot-out while Matty Longstaff is recovering from a thigh problem.

After Rotherham came up with a cash deal, Bruce admitted he did not want to deny the 23-year-old a chance of regular first-team football.

He said: "I didn't want to stand in his way. There is a deal to be done."
