Steve Bruce on whether Newcastle United are finished in the transfer window yet - and what's next for Dwight Gayle

Steve Bruce admits he will knock on the door of Mike Ashley again before the transfer window shuts.

The Magpies added Allan Saint-Maximin and Jetro Willems to the books on Friday but Bruce is still eyeing a right-back and potentially another striker with Andy Carroll mooted as a possible free transfer.

When asked about transfers, Bruce said: "The manager’s job is always to knock the door. We’re never happy.

"If you’re happy it’s not right. I’m delighted with what we’ve done. It will be a bonus.

"There’s things a bubbling away a little bit but we’ll see.

But despite talk of Dwight Gayle heading to Leeds United, Bruce said: "I want to keep him.

"As I keep saying, you’re only as good as your strikers.

"In that area we need a threat and Gayle has always been part of my plans.

"We hoped he’d be ready after China but he’s gone backwards.

"It’s a disappointment because I like him.

"I’ve tried to buy him before but not been able to afford him!"

Bruce stated that Gayle is yet to appear in pre-season only because of injury.

He said: "It’s a calf injury and it’s not reacting to treatment yet.

When asked about paying money for another striker, Bruce said: "We’re OK in that department.

"I’ve got five there. Realistically, where can we improve?

"There’s one or two little areas where we can do something but it’s all about quality."
