Steve Bruce on 'pretty ludicrous' scenario on Miguel Almiron racing to be fit for Paraguay games

Steve Bruce says Newcastle United won't want Miguel Almiron heading to South America for the next international break.

Bruce isn't alone in hoping common sense prevails with both Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp also revealing their dismay at the possibility of losing players for key games in April.

Paraguay face World Cup qualifiers with Chile and then Colombia later this month with Almiron vowing - via Instagram this week - that he will be aiming to return from a knee injury for the fixtures.

But Newcastle don't expect him to be fit until April, and while Paraguay can under FIFA rules demand he comes back for a medical examination, Bruce isn't keen.

Even if Almiron did travel he would then be required to isolate for 10 days due to quarantine rules.

Almiron's failure to return to Tyneside early after being banned for his country caused controversy and a clash between Bruce and his agent last autumn when the Toon boss branded Daniel Campos a "two bob" agent looking to make a "fast buck" on his client.

Back then, Mr Campos stated that Almiron could have to leave Newcastle to pursue his career.

When asked on the prospect of Almiron sitting on a transatlantic flight so soon after his injury, Bruce said: "I think the whole of the Premier League and EFL are looking at this situation.

"Whether you’re injured or not, it seems pretty ludicrous to me, but we’ll have to look at it and see what we’re going to do.

"We’re going to be led by other people on that, and not just with Miggy because he’s injured, but also what they’re going to do across the board around the international players.

"With a pandemic going on, I wouldn’t have thought we’d want players playing halfway around the world. It’s something we’ll have to look at."

Guardiola had said: "It makes no sense if the players go to the national team and then have to isolate for 10 days when they come back."
