Steve Bruce on 'mentality problem'; pundit praise for Jamaal Lascelles: NUFC evening update

Steve Bruce believes a "mentality problem" may be entrenched at Newcastle United following Sunday's draw with Wolves.

Elsewhere, the performance of captain Jamaal Lascelles has been praised, and it's a big 48 hours coming up for the NUST.

Here are your Newcastle United headlines for Monday, October 28.

Bruce on NUFC 'mentality problem'

Steve Bruce cut a frustrated figure in his post-match Press conference after the stalemate with Wolves.

Bruce said that his players got drawn into a defensive mentality when they were 1-0 up and this eventually allowed the visitors back in the game.

One thing is clear after the clash at St James' Park though, and that is Bruce actually urged his side to attack, not defend on Sunday afternoon.

The Chronicle understands that the Toon boss gave no instructions to park the bus and protect the lead handed to them by Jamaal Lascelles.

Instead Bruce feels it is a deep-rooted problem at United.

Espirito Santo on stopping NUFC

Wolverhampton Wanderers boss Nuno Espirito Santo insists that Newcastle United are one of the tougher sides to beat in the Premier League.

The Portuguese manager went into detail after the game and explained how his side snared a point from the black and whites at St James' Park.

Wolves, who finished seventh last term and won on Tyneside in the corresponding fixture, equalised through Jonny with 18 minutes to go.

Nuno underlined what he tried to stop Newcastle from doing on Sunday and said: “It’s not about the points. I feel we performed better in the second half, we were the better team."

NUST elections

Nearly a third of members have voted in the Newcastle United Supporters Trust (NUST) board elections, which close at midnight on Wednesday.

With discontent over the future of the club, Mike Ashley’s ownership and the ongoing controversy over the Strawberry Place development, the NUST has arguably never been more important to United supporters.

A strong and accountable supporters organisation is critical to trying to move the dial on what feels like a very important moment in the club’s history, with crowds dwindling and enthusiasm draining from the fanbase.

In the coming months they are set to take up Ashley’s offer of a trawl through Newcastle’s historic accounts and will hold meetings with the club’s hierarchy – something the Premier League requires the Magpies to do.

Pundit praise for Lascelles

BBC Sport pundit Garth Crooks has praised the leadership of Jamaal Lascelles amid 'some very sharp criticism' of Newcastle this season.

The Magpies captain opened the scoring on Sunday as he bulleted a header beyond Wolves goalkeeper Rui Patricio at the Leazes End.

The 25-year-old then marshalled a three-man defence who managed to keep Wolves largely at bay during a second-half onslaught at St James' Park, as United escaped with a 1-1 draw following Sean Longstaff's red card.

His performance was enough to warrant a spot in Crooks' Premier League Team of the Week and after a tough start to the season, the former Tottenham star believes his leadership has been 'quite brilliant' during a difficult spell.
