Steve Bruce on Joe Willock arrival and the ones that got away on deadline day

Steve Bruce is hoping that new boy Joe Willock will be able to bring "that little bit of quality" to Newcastle United's starting line-up against Southampton at the weekend.

United face a wounded Saints side after they were hammered 9-0 by Manchester United at Old Trafford last night but the Magpies was brushed aside by Ralph Hasenhüttl's boys on the South Coast earlier in the season.

Willock could be good for an hour of game-time on Saturday after appearing recently for Arsenal in both the Premier League and the FA Cup against the Magpies.

Bruce said: "He brings a certain energy and he's got a goal from midfield.

"He's obviously a talent, which you all know, and he brings, hopefully, that little bit of quality.

"He was here in the stands last night, so he'll start training tomorrow and be in contention for Saturday."

Newcastle missed out on Leicester City midfielder Hamza Choudhury on deadline day and were linked with new Liverpool defender Ozan Kabak, who joined the Anfield club on Monday from Schalke 04.

When asked if he was keen to add more to his squad, Bruce said: "Well, we always want more, but it wasn't necessarily yesterday.

"In the last couple of days, one or two, unfortunately, have fallen away which we were disappointed about.

"But we're delighted to get Joe.

"It's something which I'm sure will benefit everybody.

"He's something different to what we've got, so let's hope he can come and perform and give us a spark."
