Steve Bruce on 'great' fan expectations, cutting media access and Newcastle woes

Steve Bruce has revealed his reasons why media access has been cut for the local press.

The Newcastle United head coach has reduced his media duties in the last two games and accused journalists of not respecting him.

The Magpies have not won in 11 matches and are in their worst shape in the Premier League since 2015 after losing six games in a row.

Bruce, asked by BT Sports why he had stopped talking to locals, the former Wigan boss - who said he wanted to be judged on results when he took the job - said: "For me, I've got no problem with criticism. It's the constant criticism of the club. And when it comes to ridicule, then I think there should be a little more respect.

"We accept criticism, we're getting beat. I give up my time and my respect to speak to them.

"Yes, they can be pretty damning, we all accept that but have a little bit of respect."

Bruce was also asked about expectations on Tyneside and said: "First and foremost I am a fan and I always want what's best for the club.

"I'm determined to tell all the supporters we'll get out of this bad run that we're having but it's not easy.

"It's never going to be easy for any Newcastle manager because of the great expectations the club has and the unique club it is.

"I'll do my utmost to turn it around. I'm never going to walk away from it. I'll keep grinding away and turn it around."

Bruce was also asked if the appointment of Graeme Jones was his decision.

He replied: "That's negativity what surrounds the club.

"Fake news - I've used that too often now. It's absolute rubbish.

"Would I really let the club do that to me and to undermine me in that way? I don't think so."
