Steve Bruce on 'final plea' to Matty Longstaff to sign new deal at Newcastle United

Steve Bruce says Newcastle United will make one final plea to Matty Longstaff to sign the deal on the table to extend his contract.

The midfielder has an offer from Serie A side Udinese but Bruce - who could have to play the youngster at Brighton on Monday night - wants the England Under-20 international to stay on Tyneside.

However, in recent weeks there has been no agreement between the club and Longstaff's representatives after rejecting an initial contract.

When asked about the situation, Bruce said “For the last few weeks I’ve been answering on Matty Longstaff.

"I think I’ve made my stance pretty clear – we’ve done everything we can to keep him here, it’s up to him now.

"We think a lot of him and his progress was fantastic up until Christmas.

"Then it’s got into far too long with negotiations and football shut down for four months. It’s up to Matty."

Bruce will ask Longstaff again about his future as Newcastle go into their last week of the season.

He said: "We can only ask that question and see. In the next week or so, we’ll find out if he’s going to stay or if he’s going to move on.

"Of course I’d be disappointed to see him go.

"I put him in and his progress was fine up until Christmas.

"He’s a young lad. I hope he stays, I’ve made that pretty obvious.”
