Steve Bruce offers cautious response to Alan Shearer's call to show attacking intent

Steve Bruce says Newcastle United have no choice but to get the balance right with their tactics at Turf Moor on Sunday.

Legendary Toon star Alan Shearer stated he'd love to see Bruce and his players repeat the attacking intentions they displayed against Spurs at St James' Park on Sunday in the 2-2 draw.

Shearer had said: "It was a much more ambitious approach in every way and it allowed them to create lots of chances - they had more shots, 17, from inside the opposition box than they have managed in any other Premier League game this season."

Bruce's team produced 22 goal attempts overall and were pushing to win it at the end but whether the Magpies can afford to go for the throats of Burnley is another matter.

When asked for a response to Shearer's column, which was positive and praised the head coach for getting things right after Brighton, Bruce said: "For me, it's all about getting the balance right.

"You can have attacking intent but I'll use an example now, Norwich City who are romping away with attacking intent in the Championship.

"They started their life in the Premier League and kept those beliefs, that's how they were going to play.

"That's the way they went about it but unfortunately got relegated playing that way.

"So there's a balance to everything, of course there is.

"I've said since I walked through the door, I want to get at teams and play a little bit on the front foot.

"It's very difficult in the big league and who we are playing against.

"So you have to get the balance right to get enough results and stay that way.

"Yes, I understand Alan's comments. He's a centre-forward!

"So he wants to attack, he's not interested in defending.

"For me, it's all about the balance in the Premier League."
