Steve Bruce makes Freddie Woodman pledge as Newcastle get double injury boost ahead of Leeds

Steve Bruce has insisted he would not leave Freddie Woodman to discover if he has been dropped via the media.

Reports this week have suggested that Bruce will wield the ask on the former England Under-21 stopper in favour of Karl Darlow, who is available again after Covid.

Such a decision could be considered a little harsh on Woodman after a series of shambolic defensive displays from the defence in front of him with Newcastle also conceding three penalties in their first four games

Bruce, speaking at his Press conference to preview the game with Leeds, said: "I have to speak to the players involved, that happens.

"Every week, arguably, it's the hardest part of management.

"I have 20 odd players and I can only pick 11.

"So I think all of them are big calls, and that's my job to make them."

Bruce said he has not made the decision on who plays in goal yet.

He said: "I will make that decision with 24 hours to go.

"Make no mistake, when I do make that decision the players will know first."

When asked about other injuries, Bruce said: "It's too quick for Callum, too quick for Jonjo and too quick for Paul Dummett.

"Ryan Fraser has trained all week.

"Joe Willock had a couple of knocks towards the end of the game but he's OK."
