Newcastle United boss handed Dwight Gayle his first start of the season as the Magpies started life without Callum Wilson for the next few weeks.
Gayle was one of four changes with Emile Krafth, Ciaran Clark and Jamaal Lascelles also returning to the starting XI.
United went into the game with the temperature cranked up a little after Fulham's win at Everton on Sunday evening at Goodison Park.
Steve Bruce was hoping that Gayle could deliver in Wilson's absence as the former Crystal Palace star got the nod over Joelinton and Andy Carroll.
Bruce had other options on the bench including Ryan Fraser, Jacob Murphy and Matty and Sean Longstaff.
