Steve Bruce looking for same spirit as Newcastle United face Brighton in crunch trip

Steve Bruce remains convinced that Newcastle United can stave off the threat of relegation in the Premier League.

The Magpies sat through a tense weekend having failed to beat Aston Villa after they emerged with just a point from their 1-1 draw at St James' Park on Friday evening.

Man City did Newcastle a favour by seeing off Fulham but Brighton's win at Southampton saw Bruce's side slip back to 17th, and they will drop to 18th and into the relegation zone if the Cottagers beat Leeds on Friday.

Nevertheless, Bruce stayed positive after the Villa game and said: "Who knows, that could be the point that proves to be important for us?

"We look forward to next week and if we show the same spirit we will be OK.

"It was difficult (vs Villa) we had some really good opportunities and missed the last pass.

"We couldn't get on the end of something.

"But of course we are missing our big players at that end of the pitch."
