Steve Bruce leaving it late with one key Newcastle United selection for Leeds United game

Ahead of Leeds United's trip to St James' Park, Newcastle United have one position which has been highly spoke about this week and Steve Bruce has a lot of thinking to do.

Freddie Woodman's performance against Manchester United wasn't the greatest of his professional career and has shipped in 12 goals from the Magpies' first four matches.

Reports this week have suggested that Bruce will wield the ask on the former England Under-21 stopper in favour of Karl Darlow, who is available again after contracting Covid-19.

Martin Dubravka, though, is still out after a foot injury he suffered in pre-season but is making progress.

This decision will impact Leeds and whether they can find their first win of the season, following two draws and two losses in the Premier League so far.

Bruce, speaking at his press conference to preview the game with Leeds, said: "I have to speak to the players involved, that happens.

"Every week, arguably, it's the hardest part of management.

"I have 20 odd players and I can only pick 11.

"So I think all of them are big calls, and that's my job to make them."

This will be one of Bruce's toughest decisions ahead of a crunch Friday night clash as pressure mounts on his Newcastle future.

It would arguably be harsh on Woodman should he be dropped after a couple of poor performances since returning from a successful two-year loan at Swansea City.

The 60-year-old, however, confirmed that he hasn't decided who will start in goal against Leeds.

He said: "I will make that decision with 24 hours to go.

"Make no mistake, when I do make that decision the players will know first."
