Steve Bruce leaps to the defence of Fabian Schar after early bath vs Arsenal

Steve Bruce says that Newcastle United's Fabian Schar should not have been sent off against Arsenal.

The Switzerland international was dismissed after a challenge on Gabriel Martinelli just as the game was going into stoppage time.

However, Bruce jumped to the defence of Schar after the game and said in his post-game Press conference: "The way it is at the moment and the rules are...there's no tackles anymore.

"I don't think it deserves a red.

"Maybe it's a yellow.

"Is it dangerous?

"Not really."

Schar has now picked up a ban at the worst possible time as he looks to get match fit for Euro 2020 after a knee injury.

Bruce feels that his side had no choice but to be physical in their approach and after Mike Dean's decision he was left frustrated.

He said: "We're playing Arsenal so you have to get into them.

"When that stops it becomes very difficult.

"I have sympathy for Fabian Schar.

"He tries to win the tackle.

"Maybe a yellow card but certainly not a red."
