Steve Bruce knows Newcastle United 'have got to spend', and gives Joelinton response

Steve Bruce insists he needs no reminding of the fact Newcastle United must get moving in the transfer window.

The Magpies have not made a signing this summer but Bruce is hoping to tie up a deal for Joelinton.

When asked about transfers Bruce said: “Of course we have, but the whole club is geared up to do that in the next few weeks.

“You don’t have to be a rocket scientist to see where we are light and we are going to spend the next three weeks working on it.

“We’re going to need at least three or four in.”

When asked about Joelinton specifically, Bruce said: “I’m not sure we are with that, I’ve not spoken to Lee (Charnley) since I got there.

“I was in bed at 19.30 last night.

“I am aware I need to bring players or we are going to be light.”

Bruce says he’s had assurances on his budget from Mike Ashley.

He added: “We’ve talked about budgets and it was pretty straight forward.

“I think Mike has always been pretty straight, but whatever the club brings in and whatever we generate by getting players through the door, we've got to spend.

“That’s where we are, that all the conversation was.

“I’m under no illusions, we need to bring a few players in to improve.”
