Steve Bruce issues update on Andy Carroll's injury status after striker pulled out of squad for Wolves

Steve Bruce has insisted Andy Carroll's groin injury is "not serious" and the striker could even make a return against his old club West Ham next weekend.

The Toon boss has also revealed that Fabian Schar's knee injury isn't long-term.

Bruce said that United have plenty cover in the centre-back area with Federico Fernandez and Paul Dummett vying for a spot in the middle this weekend in Schar's absence.

Bruce said: "It is not serious.

"Andy felt his groin, Fab picked up a knee injury.

"They are out of the Wolves game, but could well be back in contention for West Ham."

When asked to expand on Carroll's injury status, Bruce reflected: "It's not his ankle thankfully.

"Everybody can pick up those type of niggles especially when you are sitting on the bench.

"He's stretched for one.

"But the way we are managing his ankle is positive.

"Nobody is more disappointed than Andy.

"He has getting into position to start a game.

"It's not to be, disappointing for everybody but we need to carry on."
