Steve Bruce issues message to Newcastle United fans after they overcome travel chaos to back their side at Tottenham

Steve Bruce has paid tribute to Newcastle United fans for their sterling efforts to get to London over the bank holiday weekend and help the Magpies take three points at the new Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

A total of 3,000 supporters still found a way to the capital despite the cancellation of LNER services to King's Cross due to engineering work.

Fans travelled by road and air to ensure they were able to witness some history as Newcastle marked their first visit to the new venue with a fantastic away win.

Bruce told Chronicle Live: "After that weekend I would just like to pay a special tribute to our fans.

"For all the problems they had to get to London they were there for us.

"And if anybody was in that sun, it was our fans.

"They must have been baking in there.

"But it was a sight to see when they took their tops off and waved them in the air.

"For them you can only say a big thank you.

"You just can't take them for granted.

"We have unbelievable support and I am so pleased that we could give them something to shout about at the weekend."

Tottenham Hotspur vs Newcastle United - fans celebrate (Newcastle Chronicle)

Newcastle supporters had been left deeply disappointed after further issues the week before when trying to get to Norwich when a train strike left many fans having to make alternative arrangements.

But even after a 3-1 defeat, United fans applauded the players into Spurs' stadium as they made their way from the bus to the changing rooms.

Bruce felt that the fans had the team's back from the offset at Tottenham.

Bruce said: "They really did.

"What makes this club more unique than anywhere else is the unrivalled support it has.

"I have said many times now we can't take it for granted.

"How they got back and how they got there is beyond me, with no trains that is a long journey to London on a bank holiday.

"They came in their thousands and fair play to them."
