Steve Bruce is asked the big Jeff Hendrick question as Newcastle prepare for Chelsea

Steve Bruce is facing a big decision on returning midfielder Jeff Hendrick ahead of the clash with Chelsea.

Hendrick was shown the red card playing for the Republic of Ireland against Wales and restarts the domestic programme after a patchy few weeks in a Newcastle shirt.

With Bruce having Sean Longstaff, Matty Longstaff and Isaac Hayden pushing for places, and Matt Ritchie, Jonjo Shelvey and youngster Elliot Anderson at his disposal he has plenty of options ahead of the visit of Chelsea.

Bruce said: "There is no bigger accolade than playing for your country as a player.

"Especially if you've done well.

"When they come back into club football they have that bounce.

"Jeff Hendrick had a difficult week but it's part and parcel of being a professional footballer.

"He's had a red card but we will all have many of them.

"He will be OK but he's a good pro and a good lad.

"We judge where they have been and what they have been up to and how they have reacted.

"But he's had a difficult couple of weeks yes."

Bruce also admitted it was good to have options and there's no doubt his team sheet against the Blues will make for interesting reading.

Bruce added: "That's the good thing.

"Matt Ritchie and Jonjo Shelvey are not too far away, so is Isaac Hayden, he's champing at the bit.

"That competition always helps."
