Steve Bruce hopes Academy new boy can follow in Elliot Anderson's footsteps

Steve Bruce has welcomed Newcastle United new boy Jay Turner-Cooke to St James' Park.

The attacking midfielder - the son of former Sunderland and Gateshead star John Cooke - has arrived from the Black Cats on a free transfer following his release from the League One club.

Bruce will let the 17-year-old get his head down and work alongside Neil Winskill with the Under-18s and Academy staff such as Chris Hogg and Peter Ramage.

When asked about Turner-Cooke's presence, Bruce said: "The more good players we've got throughout the club the better.

"We've seen him at the Academy so we've brought him in.

"If he's as good as the young kid we've seen Elliot Anderson, we hope to be successful with it."

Turner-Cooke's arrival last Friday proved to be Newcastle's only piece of January business so far but the excited youngster said: "Proud moment signing a professional contract for Newcastle United. Hard work continues.

"Thank you to the players and staff at Sunderland for the last seven years, good luck for the future."
