Steve Bruce hints at role for Longstaff brothers with Jonjo Shelvey 'on the mend'

Steve Bruce has admitted that both Sean and Matty Longstaff are back in contention for the home clash with Everton.

With Jonjo Shelvey sidelined with a hernia injury, Bruce will consider the brothers in the next clutch of matches with neither getting a run in the side to date this season.

Bruce, who handed Matty Longstaff his Premier League debut, now has the youngster back after a thigh problem.

He said: "They bring an energy to the team and they're both very decent passers of the ball too. "They've had a few problems but we hope they can stay fit because they've both got something to offer.

"Matty has played a game and a half for the U23s and looks like he's over his injury.

"Sean has recovered from a bout of tonsilitis."

Bruce also has Isaac Hayden back for selection after he wasn't risked at Wolverhampton Wanderers due to hamstring concern.

Bruce said: "He's fine. He's trained all week but didn't think I could gamble with him last week."

When asked about Shelvey's operation, he said: "Thankfully it was all pretty routine. He's on the mend.

"These days with the way hernia injuries are we are thinking it could be three or four weeks - certainly after the international break we hope he's there or thereabouts."
