Steve Bruce heaps praise on Jonjo Shelvey after wonder goal that stunned Man City

Steve Bruce has revealed that Jonjo Shelvey is doing exactly what he wants him to at the moment.

The midfielder moved on to three goals thanks to his late equaliser against Manchester City to earn Newcastle an impressive point at St James' Park.

For Bruce, Shelvey's form has coincided with a solid run of form with United taking seven points from a possible 12 in recent weeks - and he even felt that the former Charlton star's goal was up there with Kevin De Bruyne's sizzling strike that crashed off the Leazes End crossbar late in the game!

Pep Guardiola rues Newcastle's 10-man defending - but admits Shelvey 'changed the game'

He said: "That's his second goal in three games and very quietly over the last few weeks, I've been very, very pleased with Jonjo.

"He's responded to what we want to do, and of course we all know that in his locker, he's got that ability.

"Who's was the better one, his or De Bruyne's?

"I'll let you decide!"

Bruce had praise for Shelvey's intuition at the end of the game after calling for a quick pass from Christian Astu.

Bruce said: "The keeper got nowhere near it.

"Usually teams have somebody on the edge of the box.

"But he's noticed they were all in the box.

"A training ground goal and an assist from Miguel Almiron for the first one."
