Steve Bruce has pointed out what Allan Saint-Maximin needs to do - and the winger appears to be listening

Having watched the winger grab the only goal of the game against Southampton, you'd think that maybe Steve Bruce would have been full of praise for Allan Saint-Maximin.

In his post match interview he largely was, but there was still constructive criticism laid at the Frenchman's door about his defensive duties, and decision making.

Speaking to the BBC, Bruce said: "He is always a threat, always wants to try and go past people and that's dying art these days - you don't see people going past people with that natural ability.

"He's got it in abundance.

"He's still got to learn a bit the other way.

"Maybe cross it pass it, a little bit more often but for natural ability he's teriffic."

After a week in which the pair were accused of falling out, some would consider Bruce's words dangerous ground but it's no secret that more has been wanted from Saint-Maximin defensively.

The stats show that whatever has been said on the training ground has been taken in by the former Nice man.

Against Southampton, Saint-Maximin was very nearly unplayable.

His attacking stats are no surprise - two key passes, and seven dribbles as he tried, and eventually succeeded in getting United the three points.

But it's his defensive stats which show Saint-Maximin is taking on board what the coaching staff are asking from him.

The 22-year-old won five of his eight attempted defensive duels, made two key interceptions, and worked hard to recover four stray balls - including Sean Longstaff's pass which Saint-Maximin nicked of the toes of Yan Valery to then slot home for the winner.

Perhaps the prime example of Saint-Maximin listening and showing his full commitment to the defensive side of his game is in the 94th minute, chasing back deep into his own half to win the ball with a slide tackle.

Bruce has laid down the challenge to the winger, and reminded him again of where his game needs to improve - based on the Southampton victory, Saint-Maximin appears to be listening.
