Steve Bruce has four absentees for the clash with Aston Villa at St James' Park

Newcastle United will take on Aston Villa without the services of four players at St James' Park.

The Magpies have had no fresh injuries despite their high octane restart against Sheffield United with all 16 of the players used in Sunday's 3-0 win over the Blades getting through the match unscathed.

Bruce, though, is refusing to take any chances on Matty and Sean Longstaff while Florian Lejeune and Ciaran Clark remain unavailable.

Speaking at his pre-match Press conference, Bruce said: "I don’t think we’ll have anyone back (for the Villa game).

"We’ve seen the young Longstaff, we’ve seen Matty train yesterday for the first time.

"Sean is still niggling around, but with muscle injuries, we’re just erring on the side of caution.

"If you bring them back and all of a sudden they’re going to miss three weeks, then it’s over with.

"So we’re just erring on the side of caution and give them an extra few days if they need it.

"But Matty trained yesterday so we’ll see how he is."

Frenchman Lejeune has suffered a spate of knee problems in the last two years and is another Bruce is monitoring carefully.

He added: "Flo (Lejeune) is out on the grass doing a little bit, but unfortunately Ciaran (Clark), who has had an operation on his ankle, is a bit sore.

"They’re not joining in at the moment."

Bruce also has to bear in mind Sunday night's FA Cup clash with Manchester City on Tyneside.

City ran out 5-0 winners over Burnley on Monday night and have a Thursday night visit to the capital to face Chelsea.

Bruce added: "We’ll see. Very quickly, we got up to the levels of fitness that are required, so we’ll see how they’ve recovered.

"There’ll be time for change, but whether that’s tomorrow, so early, we’ll see."
