Steve Bruce has done a better job than Rafa Benitez at Newcastle reckons Jermaine Jenas

Steve Bruce and his players deserve 'a lot of credit' for leading Newcastle United to a midtable finish according to Jermaine Jenas as the former United midfielder analysed the season so far.

With Newcastle United on 43 points with three games remaining - Bruce is within just two points of bettering Rafa Benitez's highest top-flight points tally with the club, and Jenas reckons that the current head coach has done a 'better job' than the man he replaced.

"This is a team that in my opinion has overperformed this season - again," Jenas told BT Sport ahead of United's game against Spurs.

"Last year, the reason was Rafa Benitez apparently and once he left it was all going to fall apart.

"Well Steve Bruce has come in and shown he can do a better job and also the players, you got to give them a lot of credit.

"They've had to change system sometimes, they've been criticised heavily for not scoring enough goals, they have found a way and to put in some really good performances in on the pitch which has been able to give the fans a little bit of breathing space from a lot of negativity surrounding the club sometimes.

"You've got to give the players and the manager a lot of credit."
