Steve Bruce handed double boost ahead of Newcastle United's hectic festive period

Andy Carroll has returned to training with Newcastle United after missing the 2-2 draw with Manchester City with a minor knock.

A smiling Carroll was back alongside his team-mates at Benton yesterday as the preparations for the clash with Sheffield United continued.

Steve Bruce will make a decision on whether he travels to South Yorkshire later today after a muscle injury ruled him out of Saturday's encounter with the champions.

Bruce also watched on as DeAndre Yedlin made a comeback to the training pitches after missing the weekend's action with a hip problem.

Although, the Toon boss is under no pressure to rush the USA international after Javier Manquillo put in an excellent showing at St James' Park and helped set up the equaliser for Jonjo Shelvey when winning a free-kick.

But the positive news for Bruce is that both players look set to be available for the hectic festive period.

For Carroll that is deemed as a massive boost after the striker's previously troublesome ankle remains unscathed.

Bruce is set to face the media at lunchtime to preview the game with the Blades.
