Steve Bruce hails Joelinton as Newcastle striker ends long goal wait

Steve Bruce believes that Joelinton will continue to get better but admits he was relieved to see him score his first goal at St James’ Park in the Premier League.

Joelinton sealed the game with a well-taken finish at the Gallowgate End after a one-two with Miguel Almiron.

It was Joelinton’s fourth goal of the season in all competitions.

Bruce said: “He wants to do well. Of course it’s been difficult for him. He’ll only get better.

“He wants to achieve things.

“He scores a goal, and we’ve been working on getting him in that area. We’re very, very pleased.”

Joelinton has struggled for form since his £40million move from Hoffenheim.

But despite missing a first half chance, Bruce was delighted with his striker.

He said: “It’s never easy being given the number 9 shirt.

“A young lad like he is, to come from a different county and league, there’s no doubt he’s found it tough.

“Hopefully, that’ll make it a lot, lot better.”
