Steve Bruce gives verdict on fans returning - and makes admission over Sheff United loss in January

Steve Bruce was asked in his Press conference whether he had any "anxiety" over the return of supporters to St James' Park.

The Magpies face Sheffield United in their first game in front of fans for the first time since February 2020 on Tyneside.

That day Newcastle drew 0-0 with Burnley, and now take on Sheffield United sitting just above the relegation zone.

When asked if he was anxious about the return of fans, Bruce, speaking to BBC Sport: "No, not at all.

"I am delighted.

"Whatever type of reception I get, I am delighted, it's been a bloody long time since we have seen the supporters.

"Let them come in, go to the pub and have a few beers and support their team."

Bruce then added: "I think the fans will be coming to cheer on their team.

"It is important we can put on a performance like we have been, anything anywhere near Leicester or West Ham.

"It's great to see them back."

Bruce feels that his side will feel the benefit of fans as they prepare for their first game of the season.

Bruce said: "If we ever needed reminded what we play football for it's the supporters.

"I'm sure people will go to the pub and have a beer and are able to discuss things.

"It's the spectacle we seen it at the weekend at the FA Cup final, and the play-offs and the atmosphere at Barnsley.

"I'm sure we will feel it as we are heading to the ground and start seeing the fans."

United lost 1-0 to the Blades earlier this term and Bruce admitted he got his team selection wrong that day.

Bruce added: "It was certainly one of the dark moments of the season.

"I certainly picked the wrong team so I take full responsibility.

"Our performance at Sheffield was nowhere near the levels.

"Sheffield are relegated but won at Goodison Park a few days, and won at Old Trafford.

"That doesn't happen in other leagues.

"If we don't show them respect it will be difficult for us."
