Steve Bruce gives response when asked about planned boycott against Arsenal and Newcastle's stay away fans

Steve Bruce has asked for disgruntled Newcastle United fans to judge him solely on results.

However, he admits that he won't appeal to a lot of the supporters after following Champions League winner Rafa Benitez through the door at St James' Park.

When asked about the prospect of Newcastle fans who are planning a boycott for the opening game of the season, Bruce said: "My message would be, yes, I’m no Rafa Benitez, but just give me a chance and see how we get on.

"I will always be judged on results but I will do my utmost to try and win them round if I can.

"I understand that I won’t be, for the vast majority, their cup of tea."

Bruce has dealt with fan protests at Hull City when their supporters turned on Assem Allam.

He reflected: "It was a similar sort of position.

"It maybe didn’t have the same spotlight.

"But hopefully my experience of that will help me along the way.

"We need to win matches to get that feel-good factor.

"I managed that at Hull."
