Steve Bruce forced to change team sheet for Crystal Palace clash due to Covid absentee

Steve Bruce will have to cross out one name from his starting XI to face Crystal Palace tonight due to Covid-19 issues.

The return of players from international duty last week has coincided with problems for the Magpies behind the scenes with a couple of squad members affected and coaching staff.

But Bruce must get on with the job at Selhurst Park as he looks to address United's slump in form.

The clash, which will be streamed live on Amazon Prime this evening, sees Newcastle look to stop the rot after two consecutive defeats.

When asked about the problems with Covid for his players and staff, with Ben Dawson continuing to take training this week at Benton, Bruce said: "We have to manage the situation.

"We have got two or three individuals in the training ground at the moment that are self-isolating.

"That is difficult to manage, and we’ve got one or two injuries, but we’re getting a few back and we’re not as bad as some."

One big boost for Newcastle is the return of Callum Wilson but the game appears to have come too early for former Palace star Dwight Gayle.

Wilson, however, won't be alone on the flight in terms of returnees.

Bruce said: "We’ve got Jonjo, Matt and Callum back, and that can only be a positive."

The Toon boss would not be pressed on revealing who will miss out tonight and said: "I won't name individuals.

"Some people are isolation or have symptoms."

As reported on Chronicle Live yesterday Andy Carroll is missing with a calf injury.
