Steve Bruce finds positives in Newcastle's Old Trafford defeat and hails 'superstar' Ronaldo

Steve Bruce has reacted to Newcastle United's 4-1 defeat at Old Trafford. The Magpies put up a decent fight in the first half before going down 1-0 in first half stoppage time.

But despite equalising through Javier Manquillo a second-half collapse resulted in a comfortable win for Man United.

Bruce said: “I was very pleased with a lot of it. We were a constant threat on the counter attack.

"With the third goal we had a big opportunity with Joelinton to maybe go 2-2 and then with the quality [Bruno] Fernandes possesses he smashes, one in the top corner and all the hard work all comes undone.

“We had some really good opportunities.

"I can’t remember coming here with so many opportunities.

"The difficulty is giving poor goals away."

And reflecting on Ronaldo's double strike on his second debut for the club, Bruce said:: "That is the goalscoring instinct of a centre forward, where our defenders haven’t followed it in and he is on the end to get a tap in and change the game.

“If there is a genuine superstar among everyone, then this kid is with what he has achieved.

"We have witnessed it again today. He is something else."
