Steve Bruce felt Newcastle were always going to face a 'wounded animal' against Manchester United

Steve Bruce believes that Manchester United were always likely to arrive at St James' Park in the role of wounded animals.

After being thrashed 6-1 by Tottenham Hotspur before the international break, the Red Devils had two weeks to stew on a heavy home defeat.

But Newcastle failed to capitalise on their misery and even after going 1-0 up on Saturday night they went easy on the visitors.

However, Bruce emerged to say: "They will not have enjoyed what happened last week.

"We found it very difficult, there's no disputing that.

"They will do that to teams.

"If you leave them space they have lightning pace at the top of the pitch.

"It's a work in progress for us, we will have bumps along the road but we will keep working at it."
