Steve Bruce explains why he started Andy Carroll ahead of Miguel Almiron

Steve Bruce offered an open and honest assessment of his side's 3-0 home defeat against Brighton & Hove Albion.

The Magpies boss was far from happy with his side's start to the game as Tariq Lamptey ran the game in the first half before going off injured.

But by that time Newcastle were 2-0 down and the game had slipped away from them after a penalty and a close range finish from Neal Maupay.

Bruce said: "We never gave ourselves a chance.

"The penalty was dubious. It looked soft.

"Then we’ve let them in again with a basic piece of play.

"We’ve been beaten badly at home.

"We have to accept we weren’t good enough.

"That’s what it is."

Bruce started the game with Andy Carroll in his front two but fans are asking why Miguel Almiron was on the bench for the second game running in the Premier League.

Bruce said: "When you're 2-0 down after seven minutes then it becomes difficult against a team who base their style on possession.

"We were better when we made from the change but I think it would have been unfair [not to start Carroll] after the performance he had last week."
