Steve Bruce explains what is 'different' about Newcastle United's tactics going into 2021

Steve Bruce says that Newcastle United fans can look forward to the remainder of the Premier League season in the knowledge his team are trying "something different".

Bruce and his players have tweaked their tactics and are now operating 20 yards higher up the field rather than parking the bus in games and playing on the counter attack.

The Toon boss saw his side's chances of FA Cup glory disappear at the Emirates Stadium on Saturday evening, but hoped fans could see the bigger picture.

Bruce said: "I hope the supporters watched it and appreciated that the players gave it everything they've got.

"They missed a wonderful opportunity late on and you have to take the chance.

"I think the supporters can see the players gave everything.

"Hopefully they enjoyed watching their team give it their all despite being knocked out."

When asked what is different about his team going into 2021, Bruce pointed to a tactical switch he'd made in recent games.

Bruce added: "Rather than sitting deep and playing off a low block it's to try to get higher up the pitch.

"That is always the difficult part and of course to win a game you have to score, so yes we had chances (at Arsenal) but haven't been able to take them.

"That's the sort of positive for me.

"We're trying something different and it nearly paid dividends."
